Comixpedia Now Powered By Drupal

NOTE:  You can use your existing id and password.  On your first log-in (and your first logout) to this site you will see an error message but only that first time.  Just log-in and go to "my account" and from there you should have no problems at this site.

The RSS Feed for the site is at http://altertainment.org/node/feed (or http://comixpedia.com/node/feed) (there's a link to it on the top menu).

BIGGEST CHANGE TO KNOW ABOUT: There is no longer a "submit news" function - instead go to "My Blog" (in that menu upper left corner of the site) and post a new blog entry for yourself.  The Comixpedia editors will promote those of general interest to the front page.  My sense is this better then the old system b/c now even if we don't post it to the front page (or don't post it right away) it's still on the site on your "blog" and it'll show up on the RECENT BLOG POSTS block (which is in the lefthand column).

Also if stuff isn't working or you experience weird stuff I haven't mentioned email me at xerexes AT gmail DOT com so I can investigate.  Thanks!

KNOWN BUGS:

  • If your user account # at the old site was 2215 or higher you will need to create a new account here.
  • If you click on a story or forum link that says -  Access denied: You are not authorized to access this page - it's probably because it was a post from a very recent user that I did not get ported over to  the new database.  It should be resolved soon.

Quick update on Comixpedia: we have a new server online which means no more bandwidth/cpu/harddrive problems so that's good!

Also good, but will be a bit disruptive this week is that in moving to the new server I'm migrating part of "Comixpedia" to a new platform running on Drupal.  In fact, if you're reading this you've made it to the new Drupalized Comixpedia.  Drupal is going to let the Comixpedia community do a lot more community things and once we get used to it I am positive it's going to make things a lot more interesting here.  But in moving servers and altering DNS entries it may be a day (or even 2) before everyone's seeing the right sites at the right URLs.

Here's how Comixpedia will work going forward:

  • Comixpedia.com will host the news, forums (and not yet but soon the calendar and magazine) and be the primary community site to check out everyday.
  • Comixpedia.net will host the library of creators and webcomics and the top list.  I have more ideas for this site but I'm not sure on when I'll get to them.
  • Comixpedia.org (which is currently down) will continue to host the Encyclopedia Webcomics, the community-edited webcomics wiki.

So what's new at Comixpedia.com?

An amazingly powerful taxonomy system.  Now when you want to write about something here at Comixpedia you'll see that you can tag it with a genre, collective, publisher, local group or general news topic.  Or tag it with more than one type of category.  And the same categories apply to all types of content: stories, blogs and forum posts (and later magazine articles as well).

Every user gets a "blog" at Comixpedia.com.  Which isn't really about all of you "blogging" here - what it means is that every creator can post about every new project she or he is working on as often as they want.  All of those posts will show up on the Recent Blog Posts list and the Comixpedia editors will promote those of notable interest to the front page.  There'll be lots more writing about webcomics with lots less filtering from Comixpedia.  (This by the way is a "blog post" in my blog)

No more PHPBB hacks.  Seriously that's huge.  What the Drupal forums lack in PHPBB familiarity they make up for in intelligent design.  Just like the new user blogs, the Comixpedia editors can promote those forum posts of notable interest to the front page.

Track stories and other people on the site better - the track function has much more potential to let you keep up on stories, forum posts and comments than the old platform.

And there's much more I can bring to this site as I work through Drupal on my testbed site.

To get here I had to handcraft some scripts to transfer the mySQL data over here.   Everything made it (although the last 2-3 days of user accounts, forum posts and stories and comments I may have missed some chunk of that) although there will be a few quirks at first.

  • There's no tracking information generated by what I just transferred over.  So until we start generating content natively here you won't be able to make use of the tracking functions I mentioned above.
  • The forum posts will often repeat the initial post as the first reply.  (If you see that with one of your forum posts, please go ahead and delete the duplicate reply)
  • I was able to bring back the original forum posts and combine it into the new forum structure.  So the entire forum history of Comixpedia is back in one place.
  • I moved over the old 24 Hour Pixel People staff blog posts.

There's a lot I'm sure I'll hear from folks over this month.  The design for example is not mine, it's an off-the-shelf model.  I'll be working on that at some point in the future again.

Actually I'm positive tomorrow will be a rocky day so since it's well-after midnight, I'm headed to bed.

Some minor issues:

Got a broken list link for the portal list, not a huge issue but I don't like having any broken links on the site so please let us know ASAP how it gets fixed.

Also, is there anything you can configure in Drupal to allow a user to opt out of having their visits broadcast? I don't much care for being on that 'users online' list every time I brush through here looking to see if there's anything interesting online, and logging in/out repeatedly just to be a bit more private is a hassle.

Thumbs up for all the effort, and thanks, in my opinion anything that gets away from phpBB is a good thing at this point :-p

Online Users List

Aleph

The links to the comixpedia.net portal and library are working for me - are you talking about the tabs up top or something else?  I am also keen on cleaning up any dead links resulting from this move..

I can research the users online list question.  The old PN code actually did the same thing - I just didn't have a block on the front page - you had to go to the Community/Users page to see who was online.

Broken link IMAGES, sorry

I'm actually talking about the images-- they seem to be broken on other sites as well as mine, I checked a few before asking ^^; The links in lead where they should, they just /look/ broken, my bad for saying 'broken links' when I meant 'broken images'. Mental typo of sorts.

And yeah-- it's realy just having it so prominently displayed that's uncomfortable for me, but I figured if others like having attention drawn to their presence it would be better to ask about opting out than ask the entire site to change. I can always just stay logged out, I just thought I might ask before taking the hassle route.

Visibility and Images

Ah, yep, images are busted now.  I'll have to tackle that tonight.

I will definitely investigate options on the list of users and their activities stuff you asked about. But it may take at least a few days for me to figure out whatthe code supports in terms of options.

Broken Vote Links

Besides the "Vote Images" being broken for the top list, the link itself isn't registering any votes (regardless of whether I'm logged in or not).

Try this one as a test: Vote For Line Item Vito

As far as the change-over is concerned, I'll reserve judgement until things settle down. For the moment my biggest reaction is some annoyance, as this is the 2nd makeover in the past 3 months. I'm not sure if I'm reading your announcement correctly, but this change seems to have been forced on you instead of it being voluntary. OK, I understand that. Sorry for the hassle. But if it was voluntary, I'd much prefer it if you could get all the kinks worked out BEFORE you change what we see. And, I'd prefer it if you announced that there would be a change before the changeover occurred.

My next observation is that splitting Comixpedia into 3 different functions depending on the top-level domain (.com, .net, .org) is very confusing. I've rarely heard of a website (well, NEVER, actually) that divides functions / content along these lines. I'd rather Comixpedia have ALL of these functions all together at one website. If you want to subdivide the site after that, fine, but I don't recommend the approach you've taken. Sorry. Question: Was this necessary because of the way the various Comixpedii are being hosted?

Trying to be helpful, even though it sometimes sounds like I'm sniping. Sorry for my typing's "tone of voice". If there is any way I can be directly helpful, please let me know.

Good Points - a few thoughts in response...

All fair points - I hear you.  Probably if Comixpedia actually made any money for me I'd have the time and resources to do it all better.  As it is it has to fit into "extra" time (time after (a) paid job; (b) family; (c) sleep - well it's cut into sleep this year).  That's part of why things get rolled out before they're perfect -with the time constraints I have, otherwise they might not get rolled out at all.

As it is I've taken a gamble on the site growing by moving it to a dedicated hosting box (which costs substantially more).  So I'm not about to let the site fall apart even if it's looked rocky over the last few months.  And I think the move to Drupal, even though it might be more taxing on me this month, will ultimately lower the burden on me of fixing stuff on the site.  Postnuke is just problematic at this point and although I was able to stretch it to do more things ultimately the lesson I learned is I don't want to be in the coding business, I want to be in the talk-about-webcomics business (using the term "business" loosely of course!)

As for the "split" among domain names let me clarify why this makes sense to me even if it's still largely in my brain.  Comixpedia.com is going to be what Comixpedia has been dating back to 2003 - reviews, interviews, articles and news about webcomics.  I'm hoping the new format will make it easier for more people to post more stuff on the site (without having to go through editor filters) but ultimately the site functions haven't changed.

The wiki project is sufficiently different in nature and scope that it has always made sense to me to put it on it's own domain.  (And by the way it's down now.  Which sucks b/c it's on Mediawiki which is a whole 'nother piece of code to maintain).  I don't see any good Drupal-supported wiki code at this point but if a good, supported solution became available I'd would look into it.

Which leaves the Top List and the Library (and a few other unfinished portal features I had started work on).  I've generally been frustrated with these features since rolling them out a few months ago.  Some of it's been stuff just not working right (like the errors you've pointed out) but other stuff has been related to the amount of admin work it generated for me (as well as the need to patch code, code I wrote!, behind the scenes).  My thought right now is that these functions are actually quite different than the news and community stuff that makes up Comixpedia.com and that they deserve their own URL so that if that's what you want to see you don't have to wade a level into the site to see the "top list". Also those are the functions that I haven't decided yet on whether I think Drupal properly supports so as a practical matter I'd rather leave them at the PN-run site.

I don't mean to sound like I'm dismissing your comments - I'm painfully aware of their truth! :)  But maybe all of the above provides a little context to what's happened with Comixpedia in 2006.

Forum

It look like the forum is outdated and have old post.

When we get all those goodies we post back?

Forum Is Pretty Complete Actually

Kiba/Han

I'd say 99% of the forum is ported over - it's just somewhere in the last 3 days or so that I didn't pick up the forum activity.  If it falls in that category I'd go over to the old forum at .net (just insert .net in whatever .com thread you find missing here) and copy over anything you want to resurrect.  (I'd go back and port more through the db but at this point with the site live that's much harder to do so I'm not even going to risk it.)

I won't pull down the old forum set-up for awhile and I'll warn folks before I do.

If it's something else that's missing give me more specifics about forum name/thread name etc so I can sort out if I overlooked something in porting over the forums.

Did you forgot Comixpedia.org?

I want to know what happening with the wiki.

I hope you didn't forget comixpedia.org or decide to not resurrect it for a few week.

No

comixpedia.org...

Hmm, yep, I still remember it.

I expect to get it up and on the new server sometime this week.  If it's still down by next Monday though you can start the rioting...
