Web Cartoonists Protest “Cartoon Riots”
“Cartoon Riots.” That’s the phrase MSNBC used to describe the continuing violence in response to 12 cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed published in a Danish newspaper back in September of 2005. The controversy has been framed as a struggle between freedom of speech and respect for religion. Some have called the cartoons legitimate, protected political speech and some have called it hate speech. The controversy has spurred more cartoonists to comment on the issue, even as the violence shows no sign of slowing down.
