Eddie Campbell is a tough act to follow. Even more so when he’s accompanied by a cartoon character like Hairbutt the Hippo! But readers of the second week of Modern Tales Longplay’s salute to Australian cartoonists are not going to be disappointed by the trio of fresh, inventive talents on display, as Short and Curlies–Longplay Down Under continues.
‘Snuggles’ by Edward J. Grug III
The most familiar name in this week’s lineup is Edward J Grug III, co-creator of Modern Tales’ runaway hit series ‘The Bizaar Adventures of Charlie Redeye.’
Grug’s Longplay entry is ‘Snuggles,’ a short wordless story about a golem’s induction into the modern world. Not to be missed for its droll humor and simple, elegant storytelling.
‘Belly Flop’ by Nathan Soehardi
This ’24 hour comic’ pits a flatulent swimmer against a resentful fish in a tale of high dives and scat vengeance, rendered in an engaging, vigorously-loose style.
‘Deformed Anatomies’ by Michael Evans
Evans is the cover artist, designer, and co-publisher of Dee Vee, and has design credits on From Hell and other Eddie Campbell classics. In ‘Deformed Anatomies,’ he probes the biography of Francis Bacon, whom he considers to be the last great painter in the Western tradition of portraiture.
