Modern Tales Longplay has a sensational track record of introducing exciting new talents to the world of professional webcomics, and this week no different!
L. Frank Weber explodes onto the stateside scene with ‘Crab Allan’, a rip-roaring action-packed adventure! Protecting a murder witness from a crooked politician, Crabby suffers bruised knuckles and bullet-wounds in this crisply-paced 129-page graphic novel!
Modern Tales is the leading commercial webcomics publisher, and Longplay is a monthly feature on the site devoted to stand-alone, ‘long form’ webcomics.
A storyboard artist and videogame concept designer, Weber peppers his action epic with sly comedic business. Says the artist, ‘Comedy and action-adventure can meld really well provided you do it in a way that either one doesn’t detract from the other, and makes perfect sense at the same time. It’s a fine balancing act to make sure that the comedy action doesn’t turn into slapstick, and the action comedy doesn’t turn into Shanghai Noon.’
A resident of Queensland, Australia, Weber has this to say about the Aussie comics scene, ‘The Aussie Sequential Art scene (that’s what I like to refer to it over here) is kind of a contradicting situation in a way. Unlike the US system where everybody seems to be in direct competition with everybody else, Australia is a more supportive and tightly knit community. We try to help each other out if we can and generally cheer on those like Ben Templesmith (Forty days of night), good mate Christian “Big Daddy” Read (the Watch) Or Jon who’s pencilling on Go Boy 7 when they have such great successes or these fanastic ideas. But at the same time, the majority of us are so far apart geography wise that we hardly ever see each other except for those rare Sequentail Art conventions
that usually happen about once a year in some
backwater city.’
