Cartoonretro is an interesting subscription site at $5 a month. It’s a new project from Shane Glines, creator of the Cartoon & Illustration Paradise website. Cartoonretro is devoted to celebrating and exploring the largely forgotten work of great artists, cartoonists, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers, actors, musicians and industrial designers from approximately 1925 through 1939.

Just 1 Page: A Comics Magazine That Benefits Trinity Hospice

Just 1 Page is a comics magazine produced for the British Comics Festival, which is held annually in May in Bristol. All proceeds from auctions of the original art and profits from sales of the magazine will go to the Trinity Hospice in London.

Art is donated from a range of artists, from professionals to amateurs, from small press and webcomics to the “big two and a bit”. Each issue has a theme, the latest being British comics. Toon Radio has acquired the rebroadcast rights to the Fanboy Radio talk show.

Toon Radio is an internet radio station that specializes in animation soundtracks from around the world. Toon Radio is a proud member of the Audiorealm Radio Network and SWCI. Toon Radio operates out of Buffalo, New York.

Steve Jackson Games Announces Sluggy Freelance Card Game

Steve Jackson Games today announced the addition of Get Nifty: the Sluggy Freelance card game to its production schedule, targeted for a September release to stores. The non-collectible card game was designed by Rob Balder, creator of the webcomic PartiallyClips, and features the art of Sluggy Freelance creator Pete Abrams on 110 full-color cards and assorted markers. Next Generation of New Yorker Cartoonists

NYTimes (free registration required) has an article on the next generation of New Yorker cartoonists.

[The cartoon editor, Robert] Mankoff looks at most of the 1,000 or so unsolicited submissions he receives each week, and makes a point of being accessible. “My policy is I’ll see anybody,” he said.

The move to bring in new talent to the magazine is not tension-free. Cartooning for its pages is a zero-sum game; The New Yorker publishes only 18 to 20 cartoons a week, for which it pays an average of $675 each. Space and money taken by up-and-comers is lost for the old guard, who are popular with many readers. Continue Reading
