Bombshell Brings Back Webcomic Idol

Bomb Shelter Comics Collective is holding their Webcomics Idol competition again. I’m doing the judge thing which for me at least boils down to plug the comics that I like and try to say something constructive about the ones that don’t totally float my boat. Here’s more from Bomb Shelter:

It’s that time of year again, folks. That’s right, time for the second annual Bomb Shelter Comics Webcomic Idol competition. We did this last year as a spur of the moment kind of thing, and while it didn’t turn out very well, we weren’t prepared for how big it was going to get.

This year, we’ve geared up and got ready for the event in advance. We’ve got a hand-coded voting application being tested right now, we’ve got some co-sponsorship for the event this year, and we’ve got some really top-notch judges lined up so far.

DJ Coffman & Xavier Xerexes are returning as guest judges while we welcome Wilson Ramos Jr. & Gary Tyrrell as new editions to the judges panel. We’ll probably have a couple more before the actual competition.

Submissions will be open from October 1st until October 14th. A link to the submission form will be posted on the morning of October st so keep an eye out. Be sure to sign your comic up when registration opens.

Not So Neutral Intertubes

You may have heard stories about network neutrality over the last year or so.  The basic debate is whether or not we need law to enforce the nondiscrimination and openness of the current Internet now that there are drastically fewer ISPs in business in a high-speed/broadband world.

So this is not webcomics but something for every independent artist to think about.  Here’s David Isen’s post on what a non-neutral Internet service might be like.

Don’t Indulge Drama…

Let me just take this brief moment after reading this comment thread at FLEEN to remind everyone that all posts and comments at ComixTalk should be civil and treat others with respect. We had some drama-filled days here before I began enforcing some minimums on common decency and I have no intention of letting things devolve around here again.

You can thank me later 🙂

UPDATE: Look the point of this wasn’t to pick on FLEEN. It’s obvious that FLEEN itself isn’t responsible for the intemperate remarks of a commenter and FLEEN (Gary) handled the situation pretty well. The point is that kind of stuff isn’t welcome here at ComixTalk and if you make uncivil comments they’ll get deleted and you’ll get banned.

What’s On My Monitor for Thursday, September 20, 2007

Yes, yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day… Aargh and me hearties and polly wanna cracker…

MILESTONES

INTERVIEWS

  • Eh it's from last month, but I forgot to link to it. A pretty entertaining if short interview with Warren Ellis, around the release of his Black Summer comic from Avatar. For all of the scattershot musing and ideas Ellis blasts across cyberspace every FREAKIN' day I wish he could channel a little bit of it into a serialized webcomic. (Is Freak Angels ever going to…well get its freak on?)

REVIEWS

  • Jack Carter reviews Boxcar Astronaut by Marc Lapierre and Jeff Carter and Kidnapped By Gnomes by Kathy Peterson. I've read and heartily recommend Boxcar Astronaut – which is almost Calvin & Hobbes-esque in its ability to capture innocent wonder at the world.

JUSTIFY MY HYPE

  • Someone pointed out Idiot Comics on a thread yesterday. It is largely good although as much funny-wha?! as funny-ha-ha… Definitely worth checking out.

New Additions to Modern Tales Lineup

Modern Tales announced the addition of five new comics to its lineup for the second half of 2007:

  • Little Dee, by Chris Baldwin, a daily strip about a little girl raised in the woods by animals. Baldwin is best known as the creator of Bruno, one of the longest-running and most acclaimed webcomics, which ended early in 2007.
  • Planet Saturday Comics, by Monty and Kelli Kane, a monthly comic about “childhood, parenthood and memory,” based on the creators’ own experiences as kids and as parents.
  • Gothbunnies, by Joanne Wojtysiak, a whimsical fantasy about three rabbits dealing with their new home and its overgrown, magical garden.
  • No Stereotypes, by Amber “Glych” Greenlee, a sprawling fantasy about an immortal searching for his lost love, the ordinary girl who might be what he’s been looking for, and the troublemaking gods who get in their way. No Stereotypes is returning to Modern Tales after a long absence.
  • All Knowledge Is Strange, a new strip by renowned experimental webcartoonist and minicomics creator Daniel Merlin Goodbrey. All Knowledge Is Strange replaces Goodbrey’s previous comic on Modern Tales, Brain Fist.

Editor Shannon Garrity promises interviews with the new creators – she’s already posted one with Chris Baldwin here.

Websnark and Something Positive

Hey it isn’t everyday you get a webcomic-related Websnark post anymore so let’s link to Eric’s recent post on Something Positive and the passing of author Robert Jordan. A good read and an interesting point about being more upset about losing a novel-to-be then about the actual death of the author.

Are there any comic stories going on now that would provoke that kind of response? (My not-serious suggestion below):

What? Jim Davis died? Now we’ll never know the ending of Garfield and whether Jon gets it on with Liz…

What Are Your 5 Funniest Webcomics?

Sid picks his 5 funniest webcomics (link just slightly b/c of cartoon nudity NSFW): Xkcd; Basic Instructions; Wulffmorgenthaler; Ctrl+Alt+Del; and JOHN AND JOHN.

I’ve read all of those except for John and John and while I’ve laughed at all of them I’m not sure any of them would make my list for the 5 funniest webcomics. For me those would be the comics that flat out make me laugh the most and the most consistently. What 5 comics would you pick?
