I love checking out T. Campbell’s rankings on the most popular webcomics by readership at his webcomics.com site. It soothes my inner statistician. Plus it’s always fun to see what webcomics people are reading. However, T’s latest list had a strange new addition, which is now occupying the #1 slot. And [...]

Let's get down to it! Two new feature articles today:
I talked with cat garza this month and here's the resulting interview. (Cat blogs about it here)
In his ComixTALK column this month, Derik Badman writes about "defining comics". Neil Cohn responds on his blog.
DEAD TREES AHOY:
Mitch Clem drops that the dead tree version of his webcomic Nothing Nice to Say will be published by Dark Horse and see the light of day this September.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS:
Eric "Websnark" Burns is back writing about webcomics with snapshots of Danielle Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots); Nicholas Gurewitch (The Perry Bible Fellowship); and Aeire (Punch an' Pie).
T Campbell adds up Alexa and Compete.com numbers to get a sense of the server stats for popular webcomics. UPDATE: And here's another method -- using the Google API to rank webcomics by links-in their URLs.
And how about a side order of reviews:
Alexander Danner reviews B. Shur's I AM ROCKET.
El Santo reviews the Perry Bible Fellowship-ish webcomic Truck Bearing Kibble.

I'm back from India! Happy holidays to all of you (including all of you Pastafarians too!)
COMIXTALK
- Our End-of-the-Year roundtable featuring some of the best comics journalists and bloggers on the Internet is up on the site. It's a great wide-ranging discussion of good webcomics, interesting business developments and predictions for 2008.
- We've got an interiew with Matt Melvin of the uber-popular webcomic Cyanide and Happiness.
- We're still looking for questions for our upcoming community interview with the members of the Blank Label Comics collective. Post your questions in comments to this thread.
- Don't forget to check out our advertisers - current sponsors include the Learn to Draw the Human Figure anatomy course, Mary Janice Davidson's latest book Swimming Without a Net and The Webcomic Beacon podcast.
DEAD TREES AHOY!
- The New York Times has an article on how some webcomics are creating solid sales in print and includes mention of Diary of A Wimpy Kid and Shooting War. Brian Fries, the creator of Mom's Cancer offers his response to the article. Fies argues that Mom's Cancer (which is not named in the Times article) was one of the first webcomics to cross-over to print. He could be right (although once he got a print deal he took Mom's Cancer off the web so his approach was different than these other examples), anyone want to offer a counter-example?
AWARDS
- Instructions on submissions for nominations for the Eisners are here - the deadline is March 14, 2008. For webcomics there is a separate set of instructions:
Entries are also being accepted for the category of best webcomic. This category is open to any new, professionally produced long-form original comics work posted online in 2007. Webcomics must have a unique domain name or be part of a larger comics community to be considered. The work must be online-exclusive for a significant period prior to being collected in print form. The URL and any necessary access information should be emailed to jackiee@mindspring.com.

INTERVIEWS
- Pretty interesting interview with Colonel Sweeto himself, Nick Gurewitch.
- CBR has a zaftig interview with Tycho himself, Jerry Holkins.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- Gary notes that Brian Warmoth is leaving Wizard magazine. Warmoth did the Cursory Conversations series of interviews with webcomic creators and with his departure I wonder if anyone is still around at Wizard that is interested in webcomics.
- Lots of webcomics show up in Time's Graphic Novels of 2007 article. One shows up in USA Today's list.
- Broken Frontier takes a look at Phoenix Requiem, the new webcomic from Sarah Ellerton (creator of Inverloch).
- T Campbell argues for including PostSecret and I Can Haz Cheezburger? within "comics".
- Neil Cohn has an essay on the structure of manga.

Frontpage posting will be light (as in almost nonexistent) this week so keep your eyes peeled for interesting updates in the reader blogs and the forums. It's up to... you!
HEADLINES
- Von Allan has decided to publish his graphic novel, the road to god knows on Girlamatic.com. The press release states it will start on December 3rd, running four time a week. Girlamatic closed its most recent round of submissions in early November - I wonder if we'll see an announcement of more additions to the site in the near future.
- Time to get ready for the annual Monkey Day webcomics festival! Check out the details here.

- Tom Spurgeon reviews Set to Sea by Drew Weing. This is a great comic and one I actually look forward to buying in print someday.
- Gunbaby was in the BSC Webcomic Idol contest but didn't last long enough. It's a good comic that seems very promising even as it is less then perfect. Wonderful art (reminds me a bit of Alpha Shade) but sometimes static shots kill the momentum. Interesting story ideas but sudden uncued scene and perspective jumps could be handled a bit better. Creators Matt and Gabe White have talent though - you get the sense that they could get a lot better. I'd definitely give the archives a read.
- Kate Beaton is funny!
MOST READ
- T Campbell takes a second swing at compiling webcomic audience numbers from Alexa and Compete.
DEAD TREES... For me!
- I'm playing around with a book swap service called Book Mooch. Potentially cool, although it's pretty weak in the graphic novel side of things right now... You can check out what I'm willing to trade through a widget on my home page here.
Dragonfiend: Please Stop Falsely Mischaracterizing ComixTalk
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on November 12, 2007 - 13:16
Sorry to post about Wikipedia again. I made the mistake of checking on the deletion thread there this morning (I blame Dirk Deppey for linking to it in Journalista! this morning and reminding me of it) and I see another mischaracterization of ComixTalk by the Wikipedia user Dragonfiend.

Cool Cat Cartoonist: An Interview with Gisele Lagace
Gisele Lagace is the creator of Cool Cat Studio and Penny & Aggie. On both webcomics, she currently shares the reins with T Campbell who scripts while Lagace handles the artwork. Lagace and Campbell recently announced the return of Cool Cat Studio, a webcomic I really liked during its initial year 2000-2001 run. And Lagace also recently quit her day job to do comics full-time. It seemed like a great time to find out more about Gisele Lagace so I caught up with her recently via email to talk about comics.
Can you tell us a little about yourself. Where you were born; where are you now?
