It’s official. Berke Brethed returns to the funny pages in newspapers nationwide. The Washington Post will syndicate the new “Opus” strip featuring Opus the penguin. No word whether Opus will bring Bill the Cat back with him…

It’ll be interesting to see if he can avoid some of the pitfalls of Outland, which quickly became a theater of the absurd. I always thought Breathed’s greatest strength was in his ability to develop a gag over the course of days, something a Sunday-only strip doesn’t lend itself well to. But, I’m also really in need of a Bloom County fix, so I won’t complain.
Also, half a comics page? He’s gotta have brass ones to pull that off. Yet, I think his name alone is enough.
I think that the fact that his name alone is enough may be part of the problem.
I won’t disagree with that, even though I do love Breathed’s work. However, I do think Breathed wouldn’t fit the mold of the “same old, same old” cartoonist, in that I truly believe he has some wit left in him. He left the comics page before when he felt burnt out, after all.
