2009 Resolution: Let’s Do Support for Webcomic Publishing in Drupal Right

I have been tinkering with altertainment.net to be my personal “creative” site (a slight deviation from last year’s “about” annoucement) and in doing so – make Drupal webcomic-friendly.  Luckily it’s almost there so I think with some pushing from me this could actually be a big year for Drupal + Webcomics.  I just posted the call-to-action below at the ghost-town-like webcomics group at http://groups.drupal.org:

Chicken and Cat Clean Up: New Comic From Sara Varon

Sara Varon is becoming hopefully a bit more well known at this point having several published comic books released now.  Although she has a nice website she has not really published anything in an online format.  Given her interest in telling tales most interesting to young children I’m not sure whether the lack of a web presence is a bad idea or not.

Sister Claire You’re Not the Only One…

Wow – well Sister Claire is sure to become notorious this year (if it’s not already)…. a brightly colored, manga-influenced, mostly comedic tale of Sister Claire, a novice nun who becomes pregnant… it gets a might bit more biblical then that actually and probably will offend those of you with no sense of humor about religon, especially Christianity.  Still I saw it linked to on Menage a 3 today and thought it worth recommending folks check out.

Catching Up on Comics: Inktank

I just got caught up on Barry Smth’s Inktank and realized he’s written his autobiographical doppleganger in the strip into his old (early 00’s) comic Angst Technology.  Is this brilliant? lazy? been done before?  I really enjoyed the run and hope it’s an ongoing part of the new Inktank comic but than I was a fan of Angst Technology back in its day and am pretty glad to see its characters back in action.

RELATED: I interviewed Barry about his return to webcomicking back in August of last year.

WEBCOMIC’S 500TH EPISODE ANNOUNCEMENT ERUPTS WITH CONTROVERSY

When Portland webcomic artist Evan Nichols announced the posting of "500 episodes of ‘Ask Dr. Eldritch,’ all on schedule and without poop jokes," it immediately triggered a surprising firestorm of response.  At the center of the controversy is Comic #60, which some claim contradicts this assertion.  "The Eater of All says he’s going to pupate, and Trevor the Troll replies that he doesn’t do bathroom humor," said one Fan, who spoke on condition of anonymity.  "If that’s not a poop joke, what is?"

Any Webcomic Tips for 2009?

Hope everyone is having a good 2009 so far.  I’m looking for good new stuff to read online – if you want to share a recommendation with me, leave a comment on it below.  Thanks!

And here’s some newsy stuff:

INTERVIEWS
Really good interview with Karl Kerschl, the creator of The Abominable Charles Christopher. (h/t Journalisa!)

ZUDA is putting some of its webcomic winners in print… finally!  In an interview with the creators of The Black Cherry Bombshells, there is mention that Bayou and High Moon are coming first and that The Black Cherry Bombshells should follow in 2010.

FREE AS IN FREE
Sean Kleefeld (who I still think of as a print comics guy for whatever reason) has a post titled "Wait – You Still BUY Comics? How TwenCen!" pointing out all of the free comics you can get on the web (handy if you can’t afford to buy comics in print anymore).

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
Instructables has a how-to for making "quick and easy webcomics".

The How To Get Your Food Spit In blog has a recurring photo-webcomic that’s pretty funny.  Don’t criticize it though or it’ll spit in your browser…
