Joey Manley, publisher of Modern Tales and several other subscription sites for webcomics, has agreed to sit in the “chair” for a community interview. We actually had this up at the beginning of the month but the post is gone, gone, gone, so let’s try it again. We’ll take questions until a week from Friday (February 20th) and send the top ten moderated questions to Mr. Manley.

During the last six month Graphic smash has gone live, webcomicnation is in beta, you started graphic novel review and swapmeet. What, if any, projects do you have planned for the near (and far) future? Or will you take a break from the innovating for a while in favour of honing the existing projects?
Where do you see yourself (as regards online comics, not palatial estates or amount of shampoo used) in five years?
Did you ever imagine the kind of success Modern Tales and it’s siblings have achieved? Or is it still not where you think it could be?
What about your own attempt at a webcomic? What was the reaction and will you ever do it again?
I have actually two questions. Which are your favorite print comics? And, how many pageviews does an average MT comic receives every day?

Please make a “state of the webcomic” addsress.
1) What made you decide to get into webcomics?
2) What made you decide the time had come for a subscription
model?
3) What’s the “brand identity” of Modern Tales the company,
ModernTales.com the site, and the various other features?
(I have a few ideas about #3, of course, but it’d be nice to get it in
your own words. 🙂 )
1: What are the unique qualities of webcomics that really excite you?
2: Do you see an historical antecedent to the webcomics phenomenon?
1) How successful has Modern Tales been at reaching an audience beyond established comics readers?
2) Thus far, Modern Tales has been pretty low-key with its marketing. What plans to do you have for drawing in new readers?
Given that there are several free webcomics making significant amounts of money, what would you say are the main benefits of the subscription model?
The chicken-holding avatar you use on TalkAboutComics: what is up with that? It makes me want chicken. Every day. Every day, the chicken.
Please advise.
Okay, here’s some MORE questions about numbers.
When Modern Tales began, there was a monthly update of how many people were actually subscribed; recently the figure has not been mentioned.
How many subscribers are there now?
As a quick-and-dirty ratio, how many are monthly to annually?
At a guess, how many “regular” non-subscribers read the site compared to people who actually pay for the additional services?
(Don’t know if these will get in because this is as last-minute as I could possibly get, but I had to try.)
