Flight of the Stingray: A fusion of graphic mediums makes its debut.

Flight of the Stingray, a new webcomic by Brian Freeman, seeks to combine the old and the new with over one hundred 3D renderings interwoven within traditional illustration. According to Digital Webbing, Flight of the Stingray tells the story of Air Force test pilot Jack Gannon flying a fantastic new craft that can fly through the air like a jet or plunge underwater like a submarine. While searching for a friend in the Russian arctic, Jack discovers a thriving colony of people hidden for over one hundred years. Created by Brian Freeman, an illustrator and wed designer, Flight of the Stingray is a 69 page webcomic offered for free and in its entirety.

Friday’s Rookie Round-up

Actually this week it’s not so much rookies as me looking at the top of the so-called “click for rank” vote lists that cater to webcomics (all of these lists are in our links section). There are some surprises on these lists though which means we’ve discovered some new well-read webcomics, or some webcomics have click-happy fans.

At the top of the Funny Papers list is Sinfest but in 2nd place is Hackles and in 5th place is Trilokan, two comics I’m not familar with.

At Buzz Comics there are several new comics listed: Catharsis, Oh My Gods, Random Axe of Kindness, Scandal Sheet, and Tastes Like Gravel make up the top 5 on the list.

Over at Top Webcomics, number 14 on the list is Theater Hopper, another entry in the “webcomics about movies” category.

And finally just for truth in advertising – a true rookie, The Depth Defying Adventures of Captain Nemo, is the second webcomic I’ve seen about underwater diving. Webcomics is educational! Continue Reading

Twenty -Four Simultaneous 24 Hour Webcomics?

Eric Millikin (Fetus-X) has an ambitious twist on Scott McCloud’s 24 Hour Comic Challenge.

There’s more discussion on this thread at Talkaboutcomics but here’s the basic idea:

I think a coool idea would be a 24-hour jam comic, with 24 artists. Each artist gets an hour to do a page, then they hand off to the next artist, so that in the end of 24 hours there are *24* 24-page, 24-hour comics, each comic having one page from each artist.

Maybe the best way to do it would be online, where each artist has an hour to post a page to a web site. Might make for an interesting Modern Tales Longplay, updated in real time for all the world to see … Continue Reading

The Friday Rookie Roundup

All in one place, links to some new webcomics:

The Agency is a manga-esque comic about secret agents.

Gemini Bright, is the story of Matt, a bored teen taken on a family outing to Las Vegas. Upon encountering some magic kitsch, he is transported into an alternate universe populated with half-man/dragons and other weird creatures.

Counting the Cracks is a journal comic about the life of a student in Austraila.

Silly Cone V isn’t actually new but it is toiling towards the completion of its third year under the crippling burden of a complete lack of artistic skill. When reached for comment, the author Scrubbo said “What? Somebody reads that crap? GET OFF OF MY LAWN! YOU DAMN KIDS!” Continue Reading

New NextComics Comic: Double-O-Slacker

This time of year brings much dread for thousands of students around the world, exams. But there is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of hilarity. Presenting BRUCE SCHWARZ: DOUBLE-O SLACKER, by Zack Smith and Victor Gomez, an adventure in Mexico like none you have ever seen.

Victor Gomez is an up and coming artist – this is his first work with Next Comics. Zack Smith writes for Slush Factory, NinthArt, Savant, Opi8 and PopImage. He is currently studying journalism and developing several ideas for miniseries. Continue Reading

Untitled! turns 3!!

As of April 24th, it’s been 3 years, over 600 comics, and no sign of stopping (or of wrapping up the current storyline) anytime soon!

For those of you (most of you, I’m guessing) who aren’t familiar with Untitled!, it’s a somewhat unorthodox webcomic disguised as a furry, modern-day sci-fi/fantasy/punk comic that’s all rather hard to explain… Intrigue! Romance! Muffins! Alternate dimensions! Plus, the panels are made of nifty geometric shapes! (ooh, ahh!)

Hop on over to http://untitled.keenspace.com
and.. um.. I dunno, gawk at the spectacle, or something. Continue Reading

Hey Kids! It’s “Angry People.”

Check out Sarah Shay’s Angry People, an offbeat comic with semi-autobiographical themes. And stick figures! As she explains on her site:

“Tossing aside ideas for high-school comics, workplace comics, and autobiographical comics, [I] began using characters [I] had scribbled in the margins of [my] math notes during high school.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Shay is roommates with old skool webtoonist CMK. Continue Reading

Journal of a Scuba Diving, Underwater Welding Webtoonist

Ubigod is a sporadic webtoonist, mostly because his day job, dive guy and all-around underwater construction worker, takes him offshore for weeks at a time. Still because of his occupation, his (mostly) autobiographical webcomic is fairly unique among “journal comics” and offers a look at a life very different from some of the other journal comics recently profiled by Comixpedia. He recently updated his site with a new comic. Continue Reading
