For all of you who think of webcomic critics as… er, self-important, I point you to the The Hurting comics blog and its "The Fate Of The Critic, Parts One, Two and Three" series. Actually I should tone down the snark – while it's overly long (and part three is too comic book industry-specific for my tastes) O'Neil's essay does a decent job of taking up the banner of "critics ain't all that".
I don't have a really good sense of where O'Neil as a commentator falls on the "widely read and respected" to "just another dude with a website" scale, but he has been writing about comics for almost the entirety of this century (which sounds a great deal more impressive then "about 5 years").
