Joey Manley Issues a Challenge to Cartoonists

Inspired by a debate in a talkaboutcomics.com thread (Read the original thread) about which medium is denser, in terms of storytelling-by-the-inch — prose or comics — I’ve issued the following challenge to cartoonists on my blog. It’s strictly for fun. If anybody wants to play:

A Challenge to Cartoonists

Draw a comic which adapts the following paragraph (click read more for the paragraph), the first paragraph of a classic novel from American literature. The entry must be no more than one standard-sized comics page. It must contain no words. The winner will be the comic that manages to get the most information from this paragraph illustrated clearly, and bdo so in an aesthetically pleasing, entertaining manner. Continue Reading

WebcomicsNation.com Development Update

I’ve posted a long and detailed progress report about the work I’m currently doing on WCN, which contains quite a bit of information about the powerful cross-indexing and traffic-sharing functionality the service will have — and explains my developing strategy for creating and maintaining this functionality. If you’re interested in finding out just why WCN will be different from every other webcomics hosting service, or if you’re a programmer who can offer me some helpful insight into XML, data syndication, and other such things, you might want to read the report.

Thanks!

“Teen Boat” Debuts at Modern Tales Longplay

Teen Boat by John Green and Dave Roman debuts on Modern Tales Longplay today.

Here’s what Shaenon K. Garrity, the editor of Longplay, has to say:

This month’s Longplay feature is one of my personal mini-press favorites: Dave Roman’s and John Green’s Teen Boat. It’s the story of a normal teenage boy… normal except for one thing… his ability to transform into a BOAT! A small yacht, in fact. Imagine all the nail-biting, hair-raising adventures available to a boy who can live the dream of being a boat! Go ahead, imagine!

Okay, there really aren’t that many. But if you click below, you’ll be transported, through the power of the Internet, to at least one such adventure. And there are pirates in it. Yarr!

Modern Tales branching out to “corporate comics”

Modern Tales today announced tentative plans to launch a corporate comics service in late 2004/early 2005. “We’re still in the research phase for this,” said Modern Tales publisher Joey Manley. “But I’m fairly certain it’s going to fly.”

The basic concept: license new daily webcomic strips to corporations for exclusive presentation on their own websites, with an “enter your email address to get this comic in your inbox every day” input box underneath. In addition to the strip, the company is able to put a little marketing message at the bottom of the email every day, as well. Continue Reading
