Platinum Studios Files For IPO

Kevin Church has a post on Platinum Studios filing with the SEC to become a public company (it filed a SB-2 statement with the SEC). Kevin’s post is a little bit of snark with some highly superficial speculation on the traffic at Drunkduck.com (a site owned by Platinum Studios). He links, however, to an American Ventures magazine story slash press release on Platinum Studios filing which also details Platinum’s closing of a $5 million dollar round of equity financing. Digital Media Wire also filed a story on the potential IPO but no one seems to offer any independent reportage on the details of the financing round or the realistic prospects for an IPO (including the almost prequisite speculation on initial valuation).

Diesel Sweeties Loses Rocky Mountain High

In this otherwise fairly whiny story about the state of the comics pages in the two daily papers in Denver, CO is a bit of news about R Stevens’ Diesel Sweeties buried towards the end:

In the case of "Diesel Sweeties," by Richard Stevens III, he believes he made the right choice. "We actually got complaints about how dumb the comic was, which is very unusual," he notes. "So we canceled it and nothing happened, which lets you know you haven’t damaged the franchise with somebody. If you don’t feel strongly enough to call me, it’s unlikely you’ll change your reading habits over it.

I asked Stevens’ for his reaction to DS getting the ax at the Rocky Mountain News and here’s his response:

I know I can’t take it personally, but it’s too bad they dumped me — when we did a road trip to San Diego this year, the high point for me was stopping at a diner in Colorado and picking up the Rocky Mountain news and seeing my comic for the day. It was the first time I’d gotten to pick it up myself!

School’s In: An Interview with Whitney June Robinson

Whitney June Robinson is the creator of a wonderfully charming comic about an all girls school called Alma Mater.  The comic is written and published to reflect the school calendar with Robinson finishing up the first year of the story this past Spring.  With real schools opening their doors this month, Robinson recently kicked off the second year of Alma Mater.  It's a visually distinctive comic and Robinson does a fine job of drawing on her own life experience in crafting realistic characters and storylines for the middle school years.  I caught up with her recently over emails and asked about the upcoming year of her comic.

Josh Roberts New Owner of Comixpedia.org Site

Following a summer of pursuing a new person to take over the webcomic wiki project I’m happy to announce the transfer is done and Comixpedia: the Webcomics Encyclopedia is up and running on its new server at the same URL: comixpedia.org. The new owner is Josh Roberts who already has two great comics sites to his name: Onlinecomics.net and Comicspace.com.

I’m going to repost Josh’s welcome note at Comixpedia here:

Hi everybody! First, let me apologize for the recent downtime. The site’s been moved to a new server and everything seems to be running nicely. Second, let me introduce myself. My name is Josh Roberts and I’ve taken over running Comixpedia.org for Xaviar Xerexes. My agenda here is simple: take Comixpedia.org to the next level. To that end, I plan to 1). supliment the existing database with content from the OnlineComics.net database, 2). promote Comixpedia.org to the OnlineComics.net and ComicSpace communities, and 3). add a lot more sysops to help me out. Any questions, post them to my user talk page or shoot me an email at my first name at this domain. —Josh

I wish Josh the best of luck and encourage anyone who’s interested to get involved over there!
