Heaven Forbid It Be Lavender

Next to the FAQ page, the “cast” page is almost always the first link readers click on when coming across a new webcomic. Hey, they’re lingering — one foot’s already through the door. Their fancy is caught, their curiosity piqued, they want to find out who these characters are and how they relate to one another. . . .

Here’s the thing: they don’t care what that character’s favorite color is.

A shocker, I’m sure. Just between you and me, a few hints on how not to write a character bio:

Plug: Plutocrat Country Club

I just rambled into Plutocrat Coutry Club today and I was really impressed. This comic by Ryan O’Connell kind of helped me with the aching void that the hiatus of A Lesson Is Learned But the Damage Is Irreversible has left in my webcomic soul. The art is generally of a similar soft, almost-watercolor like style and O’Connell also seems to be aiming at a darkly humorous, maybe even slightly shocking tone — but without employing formal gags. He has a small archive — all from this year. Also, absent one two-parter, he hasn’t been interested in storylines.

I like it and I hope he keeps working at it. He certainly has a vivid artistic style and I think with his sensibility he could create a pretty memorable comic series.

Quick Plug For Strawberry Comics

I never realized that Red String‘s creator Gina Biggs was part of a collective called Strawberry Comics. In fact she is, along with Robin Edwards and Amy Stoddard. It’s self-described as "an all-female group of comic creators with the common interest of writing character driven stories of drama and romance. We have a growing selection of free online comics as well as print comics on the site."

In Which the Next Guest Blogger Invades. Ow.

Hello, all! Thanks to Xaviar for asking me to guest blog at Comixpedia this week, and danke to Tim Demeter for passing my name along in the first place. It’s one of those opportunities where you reply with an instant “Yes!”, followed by a long pause — complete with crickets chirping — as you begin to wonder what to say. In such cases, we break the ice!

And by “we,” of course, I mean me.

Interesting Documentary on Culture, Copying and Remix/Mashup

This documentary is a pretty interesting look at how digital technology and participatory culture collides with Hollywood/RIAA, etc. It’s called Good Copy, Bad Copy and while I can’t really think of a link to comics, if you’re interested in copyright and Web 2.0ish creativity I think you’ll find this pretty insightful.

UPDATE: While I’m in a copyright sort of mood I’d also recommend this clip created by Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University – it’s called A Fair(y) Use Tale and it explains copyright and the fair use exception and is constructred entirely out of clips from Disney movies.

Multipurpose Your Pages

Like many other long-form adventure webcomics, Johnny Saturn began as a print comic.  I make a point of reusing my art as often as I can, so Johnny Saturn began running on Graphic Smash even before the print version hit the shelves.  Anyway, with its origins in print, I originally formatted it in full page form on the web and presented one page a week.

Modern Tales Submissions Open

Modern Tales Editor Shaenon Garrity put out a call for submissions:

With IW leaving, Inanna’s Tears at the end of its run, and my first anniversary as MT editor fast approaching, I think it’s time to put out a new call for submissions. If you’d like to publish on Modern Tales, send your submission to moderntales.submissions at gmail.com. I suggest that you first read my old Submission Guidelines post, not to mention Lisa Jonte’s suggestions for creators submitting work to her site, Girlamatic.com. Let me know if you’re interested in running your comic on the Strip Lounge (i.e., the free side), the V.I.P. Room (the subscription side), or Longplay (the section for longform comics, which is also free). The free side of MT is non-exclusive–that is, you can run your comic elsewhere online while appearing on MT. We do not pay you directly, but you can run ads on your section of MT and use the MT Swapmeet to sell merchandise. For the subscription comics, we ask for exclusive Web publishing rights; however, you are free to publish in any other medium, including print. Cartoonists on the subscription side are paid a portion of the income MT earns from subscriptions.

For this round of submissions, I’m only looking for a few new comics, and I’m hoping to get comics that will fill niches I feel are currently neglected on MT. Translation: if I reject your submission, it’s not your fault. It’s probably an awesome comic, and I just don’t have a place for it right now.

Okay? Okay! MT is now accepting submissions through the end of August!

uclick to Launch Mobile Phone Comic – Thunder Road

I saw the press release from uclick about Thunder Road which uclick is claiming is "the first North American comic book ever produced exclusively for a mobile phone debut." I’m not sure I buy that without some feedback from all of you smart readers out there. It’s certainly not the first comic produced for a phone and I’d be surprised if it was the first original content produced for a phone so I don’t see what they’re getting at. It’s a comic on a phone – by definition therefore – IT’s NOT A COMIC BOOK.

I really would have gotten the rest of the press release but silly hyperbole tends to derail my train of thought…
