Steve Conley New Director of SPX Convention

Bethesda, MD, July 15, 2003 — SPX announced today that cartoonist and web-publisher Steve Conley will assume the duties of Executive Director beginning with the 2004 season. “Because the Executive Director position with SPX is a volunteer position, although not a hard and fast rule, SPX seeks to have a new Executive Director every three years,” says Michael Zarlenga, former Executive Director. “I served for three years and it was a tremendous time commitment.”

“We generally try to choose a new Executive Director from within since that person is already familiar with many aspects of the show,” says current Executive Director, Greg McElhatton. “Knowing my three-year term was coming to a close after this year’s show, we started our search early. When Steve volunteered, everyone knew we could not find a better candidate.” Continue Reading

Modern Tales and Keenspot panels at San Diego Comic-Con

From the San Diego Comic-Con Program:

Saturday, July 19

4:30–6:00 Keenspot: From the Web to the Moon— The green-lovin’ uberbrains behind Keenspot.com, the most popular site for original comics on the web, will be breaking news on the keenest happenings and discussing Keenspot’s slow but steadily continued expansion from the web to other forms of media, including print comic books and graphic novels, wireless content, animation, toys, and eventually maybe even the moon itself. Panelists will include Maritza Campos (College Roomies From Hell!), Mike Rosenzweig (Everything Jake), Clint Hollingsworth (Wandering Ones), Brad Guigar (Greystone Inn), Steve Troop (Melonpool), Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary), Alan Foreman (SSDD), Darren Bleuel (pnes), and a tentative appearance by the sasquatch-like Chris Crosby (Superosity), who may or may not be a giant rubber suit filled with super-intelligent puppies. All attendees will receive at least two free Keenspot comic books, as well as the thanks of a grateful nation. Room 7A

6:00–7:00 ModernTales.com— Modern Tales is the leading provider of commercial web comics, offering a number of anthology and single-series websites to paying subscribers, including, among others, ModernTales.com and James Kochalka’s AmericanElf.com. Panelists will discuss the aesthetic and commercial opportunities these websites afford cartoonists, and at least one major announcement will be made. Panelists include Cayetano Garza Jr. (Whimville), Dean Haspiel (Billy Dogma), Shaenon K. Garrity (Narbonic), Rick Hoberg (Gizmo & Geers), Donna Barr (Desert Peach), and T. Campbell (Rip & Teri). San Diego Comicon is Coming… Sooner Than You Think!

If for no other reason than the big show Keenspot makes at Comicon every year (but wait, there’s more!) we’d have to label Comicon a “webcomic convention” (don’t mind the non-webcomic comics everywhere!). It’s taking place this year on July 17-20.

Keenspot will have one booth this year featuring Keenspot comics and a few Keenspace comics. Keenspot is also having another webcomic panel, this year on Friday, August 2 from 3PM to 4:30PM. (More details at the Comicon site.) [Editor’s note: As it turns out, this is not the correct time and date, but rather the schedule for the 2002 panel. Comic-Con has yet to release the official schedule for this year. Comixpedia apologizes for the error.]

Based on a completely unresearched scan of the Keenspot message boards we can provide at least this list of artists showing up at the Keenspot booth:

Ryan Duchane
Brad Guigar
Al Foreman (if they let him in the country…)
Clint Hollingsworth
John Troutman

Stay tuned to Comixpedia for more details on lots more webtoonists showing up in San Diego and daily updated odds on whether Chris Crosby will in fact appear this year. Continue Reading
