Cartoon Network Promotes Free Comic Book Day 2003

From the Slush Factory News. Free Comic Book Day gets a big boost from one of cable TV’s biggest. The Cartoon Network will place advertising of FCBD2003 on the Adult Swim website for the month of April.

“Comics and cartoons have long been linked in the public mind. Many of our viewers are lovers of comics, so we’re happy to support this worthwhile promotion,” said Dennis Adamovich, vice president of marketing for Cartoon Network. “So many of our shows originated as comics or have inspired comics themselves that it makes great sense for us to participate in Free Comic Book Day 2003.”

Free Comic Book Day

Graphic Novel Day at Book Sellers’ Convention

ICV2 reports that Book Expo America will feature Graphic Novel Day Saturday, May 31, 2003.

The increase in graphic novel sales has been one of the few bright spots in the firmament of American publishing, so it’s not surprising to see that Book Expo America is devoting a day of educational programming to help retailers and libraries to gain a better understanding of how to stock and sell all types of graphic novels. The brainchild of Kuo-Yu Liang of Diamond Book Distributors, Graphic Novel Day was created as a way to raise the profile of all graphic novel publishers and artists, not just those distributed by Diamond. In addition to the seminars and workshops described below, individual publishers are sponsoring events at their booths on Saturday, May 31 to coincide with the overall graphic novel promotion — Viz, for example, is hosting an appearance of characters from the DBZ manga. Book Expo America will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center from May 28 through June 1. Continue Reading

New PVP Comic Book Sells Well

Over at PVP Land, Scott Kurtz posted that the new PvP #1 in the Image line is ranked #166 in sales for comics in March. Kurtz notes that in comparison the last issue PvP in the Dork Press run sold only 2,600 copies. He goes on to say:

That’s an INCREDIBLE success story, due in no small part to your support, orders, calls and demand for PvP comics. We had a lot going for us, because Image really has gotten behind the book. With a jump to a new publisher, cover by Frank Cho, placement on the cover of PREVIEWS, recent mentions in Wizard and Wizard’s Edge magazine and a tidal wave of demand from online readers…how could we not do well.

Kurtz will be at Zeus Comics on March 5th (the day PvP #1 ships) from 4-8PM for a release party for the new PvP comic book. Continue Reading
