Diamond Select will be launching the first figures from its new Monty Python license, Monty Python and the Holy Grail Talking Figures, this November. The figures will be sold in pop culture retailers buying from Diamond Comic Distributors, in Musicland’s Sam Goody and Suncoast stores, and at Spencers. Ninth Art has a good interview with Peter Bagge, former indy-comic demi-god. Lately Bagge seems to have spent a lot of time trying to get his comic creations made into animated series. With his self-professed short attention span and the continued maturation of a webcomics “industry” someone ought to pitch him a project for a webcomic.

Sometimes BoxJam reminds me of James Thurber, an early to mid 20th century American author who created the Walter Mitty character. He was also a bit of a cartoonist, whose work often appeared in the New Yorker.

A NY Times review of the recent publication of a collection of his letters (NY Times requires registration but it’s free) is interesting not so much as a review but as a discussion of what part, if any, of Thurber’s work will be remembered by future generations. Dan and Katie Merritt, owners of Green Brain Comics, in Dearborn Michigan, are organizing a 24 Hour Comic Challenge on Saturday September 16. The event will be hosted in their store and is being planned as a fund-raiser for the Friends of Lulu.

By coincidence I just finished reading the Michael Chabon novel Kavalier & Clay, an amazing novel chronicling the lives of two early comic book creators: writer Sam Clay and artist Josef Kavalier. (Quickie Review: The first half of the novel is sensational, the second half almost as good).

Pulse reports that Dark Horse will begin publishing the Adventures of the Escapist with author Michael Chabon writing some of the stories.

In addition, Michael Chabon will pen the script for the movie adaptation of his novel “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” for Paramount Pictures. Continue Reading →

The multi-title agreement underscores Marvel’s commitment to partner with the latest entertainment technologies and for the first time, expands Marvel Comics’ publication portfolio to be viewed in 3-dimensions on virtually any PC screen.

Penned by Marvel’s legendary art and comic development veterans, X3D is able to assemble a complete collection of comics in 3-dimensions. These include the most popular characters from over 50 Marvel Super Hero characters from the last 40 years, including The Incredible Hulkâ„¢, Spider-Manâ„¢, Wolverineâ„¢ and X-menâ„¢. Goats: The Comic Strip, in association with Fox Searchlight, Special Ops Media, and Brains4Zombies.com, is running a Zombie Haiku Contest in celebration of the upcoming release of 28 Days Later (the new British zombie flick opening on June 27th).

Contestants must post a zombie-themed haiku in the Goats forums. The best and worst haikus will win a Zombie Pack, including an official 28 Days Later Backpack, dog tags, and poster, as well as an original zombie-themed character sketch from Goats artist Jonathan Rosenberg.
