Farawayistan is a cute, single panel webcomic which pairs often simplistic, child-like drawings with straightforward observations of the world. You probably need to read through the archives for it to grow on you, just one perhaps isn’t enough to convince you of the charm of this project. For myself, I think the charm is in its general niceness. It’s Exploding Dog-like without any pretense to visual or linguistic irony. Continue Reading
Gordon McAlpin, who also does Stripped Books (which used to run on the Bookslut website – now on his own website), has started a webcomic called Multiplex that is well worth checking out. It is less about the movies (a la Theatre Hopper) than about the staff working at the movies – “the movie theater experience” I guess you could say. Really funny and for too many reasons this one is painfully funny for me in particular. Continue Reading
Midnite Comics (www.midnitecomics.com), the on-line multi-title comics studio, today announced the imminent launch of "Spirit Walker," the third chapter of its epic on-line graphic novel Shades. The title tells the tale of a group of heroes struggling to come to terms with a Britain unsure of whether it should embrace or reject its past. Continue Reading
Animation and print comics creator Jay Stephens brings his acclaimed weekly newspaper strip Welcome to… ODDVILLE! to the web masses! Continue Reading
You may have noticed the sponsor ad for SquirrelWorks’ webcomic Battlegate on Comixpedia this month. I’ll admit I just got a chance to check out Chris Moujaes’ excellent new webcomic. And it really is a fun read with wonderful artwork (there’s a bit of Don Bluth in the style which is great as far as I’m concerned).
It starts off with a dramatic scene with main character Hugo, then shifts backwards in time to when Lt. Marcko Paolo is assigned basically to babysit Hugo who seems to be an extreme troublemaker. The last page so far is a cliffhanger – I’m eagerly awaiting the next update (for which I’ve subscribed to the RSS feed). Continue Reading
It’s not often you find a new webcomic with amazing art (seriously, amazing flawless art) and a compelling premise. Throw in a slightly offbeat narrative structure and you’ve got PandaXpress which just recently finished its first chapter (it only began this January 2005).
The story of a girl, her scientist father and a (probably) genetically altered and/or robotic panda bear (and a number of other odd characters) it begins as a tale of the girl looking for her father, but clearly has much more on its mind as it explores a PandaXpress world made up of science, whimsy, roller-skating ninjas, paraphasic goats and odd victorian-dressed gunslingers. The Angriest Rice Cooker in the World, Connor Moran’s minimalist, repeating-panel, one-character webcomic about the thoughts and angst of a fuzzy logic rice cooker, turns one month old this month. The one-month anniversary strip is here. Continue Reading
Stuff Sucks by Liz Groenveld is a great new webcomic that’s just starting. Filled with snappy dialogue, a great initial premise and loose, expressive black and white artwork, I’m definitely hooked and waiting for the next installment. Continue Reading
Randy Milholland has been pointing out Keenspace comics that catch his eye. One that he mentioned recently is The Living Tales of Zombie Jesus which, as Milholland mentions, does owe a lot to John Allison’s Scary Go Round in terms of its visuals.
As far as the writing goes for Zombie Jesus, sure Allison may have made the character of Shelly into a zombie for awhile, but not Jesus himself. Although, Zombie Jesus may be distantly related to Super Demolition Christ.
In any event, Zombie Jesus hasn’t updated in awhile but it does have an entertaining, albeit short, archive. Continue Reading
