Well, this is my last post concerning the 2006 San Diego Comicon. Sorry it's so long in coming, and unfortunately most of the sketch pictures taken in this post were taken with a cell phone camera, so they're kind of crappy. Nonetheless, they're all here, and you can click on any one to be taken to a larger version on Flickr.

I really had a grand old time at the Comicon this year. I felt like I got to know a lot of the creators a lot better, there are people out there that would recognize me if they saw me again (especially if I get in the Vanderbeam get-up). I didn't get to meet everyone I wanted to or ask all the questions I had or really squeeze myself into the inner circle of webcomics (which is every webcomic blogger's goal, I'm sure), but between Comicon and blogging here I do feel a lot more in touch with the webcomics community at large, which makes me happy. Now, on to the sketches!

Ok, I know this is about half a week after the Comicon, but it's one of those "When I got back from the con I decided to sleep for three days in a row" sort of things. But enough about that. Let's talk about Webcomics 103: Making Money.

The panel was once again run by the inimitable Bill Barnes (Unshelved) In attendance at this panel were (from left to right) Robert Khoo (Business Manager for Penny Arcade), Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary), Jennie Breeden (The Devil's Panties), Phillip Karlsson (formerly of Goats, now running Dumbrella Hosting), and as a special surprise guest who wasn't on-stage when this picture was taken, Scott Kurtz, of the Eisner Award-winning PvP.

Well, I'm officially two days behind in my blogging now, but dangit, I'm going to write up every webcomic thing I did at the con if it KILLS me. Because there was a huge amount of webcomic stuff at the con this year, and unfortunately due to the nature of Comicon (there's always cool stuff conflicting with other cool stuff), I missed a fair number of things. But I also managed to hit a lot of things, so I think it would be remiss of me to not give you all a taste of everything I did make it to.

So, after missing Webcomics 101: Getting Started on Thursday, I was determined to not miss Webcomics 102 on Friday. So I showed up an hour early, and there was already a line of about thirty people! In the end, the line ended up being just as long as it was Thursday, but the volunteer running the room was much nicer on Friday, and really packed in the people well beyond room capacity, which let almost everyone in, I believe. The picture on the left was actually taken as people were still coming in and filling the standing room only gaps. As always, click on a picture for a higher res version.

So, after missing the Webcomics 101 panel on Thursday, I was determined not to miss a single panel on Friday (except due to conflict, of course. After all, there is more than just webcomics at this con). So the first thing on the docket for Friday was to get up bright and early to attend the Blank Label Comics panel.

The panel included every member of Blank Label Comics except Greg Dean (Real Life) and Paul Southworth (Ugly Hill). At the end of the panel, the crowd got all the panelists to get together for a group picture, resulting in this fine photo (as always, click on photos for higher res versions):

One of the most fun things to do at the Comicon is to go around to all your favorite artists and get sketches of your favorite characters. There's just nothing quite as cool as seeing an artist create something right in front of you, personalized for you, and hand it to you for you to keep, right there. Pretty freaking sweet.

I've got myself a nice sketchbook (from last year's con, actually), and I'll be going around all weekend getting sketches from various webcomickers and posting them up here for you all to see.

So let's get this party started!

That's right folks, webcomics, long the "cute little brother" of the independent comics scene, are really starting to pick up some steam here at the San Diego Comicon.

Why do I say that?

I say that because today I was not able to get into the Webcomics 101 panel! And not just me, in fact the Webcomics 101 panel actually ended up turning away more people than were able to fit in the room.
