NY Press Cartoonist Renee French signs with Modern Tales’ serializer.net

Modern Tales, the leading publisher of subscription-based webcomics, announced this week that New York Press cartoonist Renee French will be producing an original experimental series for its avant-garde online “webcomics anthology” serializer.net.

Renee French is known for her highly textured, visceral, and often surreal comics and stories, beginning with “Grit Bath” published by Fantagraphics Books in 1994. Since then she has published 2 books with mainstream comics publisher Dark Horse, a children’s book called “The Soap Lady” for Top Shelf and “Marbles In My Underpants” published by Oni Press, which is a 200 page collection of her work.

She also drew “The Adventures of Rheumy Peepers & Chunky Highlights” written by celebrity magician Penn Jilette (Oni Press, USA, 1999). Her comic strip “The Taint” is published online and in print by the New York Press. French’s “micrographica,” which is exclusively available to serializer.net readers, follows the lives of a group of tiny little rodents. With individual panels drawn to a size often as small as one square centimeter, then blown up, “micrographica” shows this major American cartoonist experimenting with space, texture and story. Much in the spirit of other work on serializer.net, “micrographica” represents a visionary artist applying that vision uniquely to a new web experience.

Serializer.net editor Tom Hart said, “I can’t wait to see the direction “micrographica” will take. It’s like Watership Down with crap.”

“I’m really excited to be on serializer.net,” said French, “and I’m glad to have found a receptive place for this project. Serializer.net is the roll!”
