BRINK: Creepy Blurry Comic

IV Comics is another group with a pretty impressive roster of comics. I picked Brink by Keryn Everett to check out because the art looked fantastic (my first impression was of a blurry version of Makeshift Miracle, but that's not exactly accurate). Brink does have great art with very effective use of color. I don't like the translucent speech bubbles it uses myself but it works well enough here (Brink might consider as an alternative using the pop-up speech bubble trick employed by the webcomic Sam & Max). Story-wise it's about a couple of young people who are in some kind of test program and are either (i) crazy, (ii) gifted or (iii) both. Or maybe none of the above. It seems intentionally unclear what it's all about at times. But in a good way – this one is well worth checking out.

We Hope You Get Better Quick: Kaja Foglio

Phil Foglio posted earlier this week that his wife Kaja Foglio was hospitalized this past Saturday after suffering an attack related to Chrohn’s disease. Kaja is the co-writer with Phil of their popular comic series Girl Genius. Phil stated that they will continue to post Girl Genius (although he warned that Kaja is the technical expert of the two so that updates online will depend on Kaja's ability to "walk me through everything on the phone at this point."

Yesterday Phil posted that Kaja had improved enough to come home from the hospital. Comixpedia wishes a speedy recovery to Kaja and notes that Phil also invited folks to send Kaja get-well cards care of Studio Foglio to 2400 NW 80th St. #129 Seattle, WA 98117-4449 USA.

Some DrunkDuck Newsbits

Yesterday DrunkDuck released a new feature for the site: genre pages. The feature is still not fully complete as not all the genres are represented yet but so far users can view the genre pages for horror and manga webcomics.

This is a bit of old news but interviews with DrunkDuck creators have been posted in the forums for quite some time by administrator Skoolmunkee. The latest one was with KC Green of Rumblo.com but previous interviewees also include Hawk of Culture Shock and Carrollhach of Clench and Cheese.

Speaking of the talented KC Green, he released a video of his creative process a while back. It's done in a very KC Green-style so it's hilarious to watch.

Platinum Studios Update

Some interesting coverage of Platinum Studios as of late starting with PW Comics Week's general overview of Platinum circa mid 2007:

These comics are part of the company's overall plan to put characters into as many media as possible. In addition to its film and TV projects, Platinum has a mobile-device division; an apparel company called Number Zero Ltd., which sells reversible T-shirts; a comics news site, Broken Frontier; an online store; and Web comics site DrunkDuck.com. It also hosts the Comic Book Challenge, a talent contest held at Comic-Con International in San Diego for comics creators, now in its second year.

In addition, the Beat has a short bit about Platinum publishing some of it's "library" of comic material on Drunkduck as webcomics; apparently a Dave Roman-penned never-published comic for Platinum is now appearing as Alien Circus at Drunkduck.com without crediting Roman or the other creators. Obviously work-for-hire material (which Alien Circus is) is the property of the copyright owner (which isn't the creators by definition in a work-for-hire situation) but it's not good manners and I'd say not good business sense as well to not credit the creators. Not good manners because it costs Platinum nothing to credit Roman and others who worked on the comic and so Platinum is needlessly creating bad blood with these and other creators. Not good business sense because Dave Roman is a budding star in comics and while there's never a guarantee of success in any creative business (triply so in comics) Roman has a very commercially appealing sensibility and I wouldn't be shocked if he created a story and/or characters that might be successfully translated to television or film. There's just no reason to strip the credit of any creator but it seems even more foolish when the creator's name in question has some odds of actually becoming commercially valuable.

UPDATE: Dave Roman and Luke Weber are now credited on Alien Circus.

Penny & Aggie Fundraising Drive

I haven't seen a major fundraising drive for a webcomic in awhile. T Campbell and Gisele Lagace have organized one that kicks off now with the purpose of trying to help Gisele Lagace quit her day job. Legace is currently the artist on the Campbell scripted Penny & Aggie, but previously Legace cut her webcomic teeth on the fondly-remembered Cool Cat Studio. Lagace is already an amazingly good artist (just check out this month's cover art for Comixpedia she created) – it would be phenomenal to see her artistic growth if she could work on comics full time.

Check out the donation page and consider it – hey, if everybody chips in enough to get them to $10,000 we'll finally find out the conclusion to the unfinished Cool Cat Studio.
