Post President’s Day News Update

We should have a couple more articles for the magazine posted tonight. Comixpedia is important to me, but I take my President’s Day holiday weekend seriously…

Phil Kahn has an interesting breakdown of an unconventional “panel” layout in a recent Gossamer Commons.

Fleen takes a look at Penny Arcade’s latest print venture, Attack of the Bacon Robots and focuses on the Afterword in which Tycho writes about “webcomics” and from the excerpt, it sounds very much like what Tycho has previously written online. Which is neither here nor there really. Maybe next Fleen will get around to reviewing the, ya know, actual cartoons in AOTBR…?

Artist Alley Controversy Brewing At This Year’s Otakon

Otakon is the first con to announce a “no fanart” policy for their Artist Alley, which outlaws the selling of commissions or prints that utilize any depictions of copyrighted material, even though the artwork involved is original and not a reproduction of any actual existing images (think Inuyasha on a Chocobo).

The issues relevant to webcomics relate to the possible banning of “sprite comics” or any comics that utilize depictions of copyrighted properties to tell their stories. If “fanart” is banned, then these most certainly fall under that distinction.

Copyright is a very important area, but Otakon’s absolute position will now prohibit many of the usual activities of a con that are expected by the attendees in regard to artists (such as being able to commission original artwork of their favorite characters), along with setting up a precedent that threatens Anime Music Videos, Cosplay competitions, and the appearance of many webcomics. Eisner Judges Announced For Next Year

The Eisners, given out each year at the San Diego Comicon, have announced the panel of judges for the 2006 edition:

  • Christopher Allen: Managing Editor, Comic Book Galaxy; Contributing Writer, The Comics Journal and Movie Poop Shoot; Columnist, “Breakdowns,” Comic Book Galaxy. Lives in San Diego area.
  • John Gallagher: Cartoonist, Buzzboy; Publisher and Designer, Sky-Dog Press; described as the driving force behind the More Fund and Even More Fund anthologies in the press release; member, SPX steering committee; member, Baltimore Comic-Con advisory board.
  • Nisha Gopalan: Comics Editor, Entertainment Weekly; former staffer, Premiere.
  • Robert Randle: Purchasing Brand Manager, Diamond Comic Distributors.
  • Robert Scott: Owner, Comickaze Comics Books and More, San Diego; founder, Comic Book Industry Alliance; publisher, AFC Studio.
