BLADE DVD Giveaway This Month

Hey let’s try a give-away this month since I have something to give away!

BLADE: HOUSE OF CHTHON is a sequel to one of the Blade flicks and I have five (5) DVDs of it to give away (from the studio). And it’s the un-rated version… Anyhow if you’re interested post a comic about the Blade movies or vampire stuff in a comment to this post. I’ll give one DVD to the one I like the best, one to the one that’s funniest and the other 3 I’ll draw names out of a hat from those who posted sketches in this thread. You have until Friday, October 5th to enter and we’ll announce prizes sometime before the end of the following weekend.

They made another Blade flick, you ask yourself? Yes they did (and you gotta love a show where Blade is played by someone with the name Sticky Fingaz):

The ultimate vampire hunter is back, and he is badder than ever! Blade continues the battle against his immortal bloodsucking enemies in Blade: House of Chthon, arriving on DVD from New Line Home Entertainment on September 18, 2007. Based on the successful Blade franchise, Blade: House of Chthon is the feature-length, extended and unrated pilot of the hit television show, Blade: The Series.

Here’s some more details on this if you’re interested. (I’m actually not getting anything for this — I’m doing it all for you the readers!)

Kowabunga: TMNT Goes Webcomic!

Creator Peter Laird writes that Volume 4 of the comic of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be published as a webcomic before being collected in a later print version (Basically TMNT is going the Girl Genius route). The plan seems to be monthly updates ("Each issue will be posted online at the ninjaturtles.com official TMNT website, within a few days (or maybe even hours) of being completed.") Laird writes further:

There are a few reasons for this new approach, mostly related to my work habits. For quite some time, before I took most of the last year off from doing the Vol. 4 comics, I had been getting more and more frustrated by what was required of me, with every issue, to meet the requirements of Diamond Comics, the major comics distributor. This included preparing solicitation material three months in advance for the "Diamond Previews" catalog, along with ads and such. For whatever reason, preparing these materials on this schedule, along with actually getting the book ready to go to the printer by a set deadline, was just really starting to get to me. (Don’t get me wrong — Diamond’s system is a fine, reasonable, businesslike approach to distributing comics, and works very well. I just can’t deal with it anymore.)

I was also getting frustrated with the time lag between finishing the book and actually seeing it appear before the eyes of the fans, on comic store shelves. It would very often be up to four or five weeks from the time we sent the materials to our printer. Again, not uncommon and completely reasonable — it takes time to print, bind, trim and ship a comic book.

Comic Mix To Publish Webcomics

The comic book blog site Comic Mix announced at the Baltimore ComicCon that it was going to publish original webcomics beginning in October. There’s a post on it at the blog Occasional Superheroine. Comic Mix doesn’t sound like it’s doing anything ground-breaking but it does sound like an interesting roster of creators who will post material there:

The list of talent Comic Mix has on-board is impressive, including Mike Baron, Rick Burchett, Chris Burnham, Michael Davis, Ian Gibson, Dick Giordano, Mike Gold, Stuart Gordon, Mike Grell, Bo Hampton, Glenn Hauman, Marc Hempel, Lovern Kindierski, Linda Lessman, Jay Lynch, Frank McLaughlin, William Messner-Loebs, John Ostrander, Andrew Pepoy, Bob Pinaha, Michael H. Price, Bill Reinhold, Nick Runge, John K. Snyder III, Joe Staton, Martha Thomases, Robert Tinnell, Timothy Truman, Trevor Von Eeden, Mark Evan Walker, Matt Webb, Mark Wheatley, Skip Williamson, Marv Wolfman, and John Workman.

Platinum Studios Files For IPO

Kevin Church has a post on Platinum Studios filing with the SEC to become a public company (it filed a SB-2 statement with the SEC). Kevin’s post is a little bit of snark with some highly superficial speculation on the traffic at Drunkduck.com (a site owned by Platinum Studios). He links, however, to an American Ventures magazine story slash press release on Platinum Studios filing which also details Platinum’s closing of a $5 million dollar round of equity financing. Digital Media Wire also filed a story on the potential IPO but no one seems to offer any independent reportage on the details of the financing round or the realistic prospects for an IPO (including the almost prequisite speculation on initial valuation).

Diesel Sweeties Loses Rocky Mountain High

In this otherwise fairly whiny story about the state of the comics pages in the two daily papers in Denver, CO is a bit of news about R Stevens’ Diesel Sweeties buried towards the end:

In the case of "Diesel Sweeties," by Richard Stevens III, he believes he made the right choice. "We actually got complaints about how dumb the comic was, which is very unusual," he notes. "So we canceled it and nothing happened, which lets you know you haven’t damaged the franchise with somebody. If you don’t feel strongly enough to call me, it’s unlikely you’ll change your reading habits over it.

I asked Stevens’ for his reaction to DS getting the ax at the Rocky Mountain News and here’s his response:

I know I can’t take it personally, but it’s too bad they dumped me — when we did a road trip to San Diego this year, the high point for me was stopping at a diner in Colorado and picking up the Rocky Mountain news and seeing my comic for the day. It was the first time I’d gotten to pick it up myself!
