NYTimes on Joe Simon, Creator of Captain America

NYTimes.com has a story on 94 year old Joe Simon who will be at this weekend’s NYCC.  Simon created Captain America with Jack "King" Kirby at Timely (precursor to Marvel) and then created scores more characters at DC:

Mr. Simon may not be involved in monthly comics, but he’s still drawing. In September 2001 he recreated the cover of Captain America Comics No. 1, but substituted Osama bin Laden for Hitler. “I did it out of anger,” he said. “Adolf got his. Osama will too.”  When he heard from friends at Marvel that Captain America might be murdered in 2007, Mr. Simon grabbed his brush. The result was a “Last Supper” painting of the captain and 12 fellow champions at a table surrounded by junk food.

Platinum Studios Seeks Interns While Sign-Ups for Wizard World Texas Is Still On

This is pretty old news but for those of you who don’t know, Platinum Studios is seeking two individuals who might be interested in an internship at their LA headquarters. Hours and days are flexible but it must be on a weekday as the office is not open on weekends. It’s an unpaid internship but it is an opportunity to gain some experience and network with other people. More information can be found at the link above.

Meanwhile sign-ups for the DrunkDuck Wizard World Texas Artist Alley is still open but it’s now "standing room only." The reserved tables are now at their maximum capacity of four per table so while sign-ups are still welcomed, there’s no guaranteed table at this point. However DrunkDuck artists are pretty nice and in the past people have shared tables and traded spaces.

DrunkDuck At Wizard World

Carly Mizzou is now taking sign-ups for Wizard World Chicago for DrunkDuck members. Like the previous two Wizard World gatherings, space will be broken up based on the number of users interested.

She also released the list of DrunkDuck participants for Wizard World Philadelphia. This year DrunkDuck/Platinum Studios will also be hosting a panel and a competition during the convention.

DrunkDuck Alley Sign-Up For Wizard World Philadelphia Still Open

Sign-up for DrunkDuck members to get a free table at DrunkDuck alley in Wizard World Philadelphia (June 15-17) is still open despite the deadline passing yesterday. Anyone who signs up now however will not be guaranteed their name appearing in the program.

Table space will be broken up based on how many members are attending but any DrunkDuck member in good standing with an active comic is welcomed to sign-up. More details are available in the link above.

Zach Miller Is At It Again

With the Lulu Blooker Prize short-list announced Zach Miller (from Joe and Monkey) has been listed as one of the people under the hammer once again. Webcomics in Print quickly grabbed him on Friday for a quick interview about the Blooker Prize and the future of Joe and Monkey.

Also this weekend saw the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing 2007 take place with such webcomics as Bunny, Little Gamers, Beaver & Steve and RPG-TV donning the tables. Mike Rouse-Deane (reviewer of Webcomics in Print) details his experience in his LiveJournal Blog. A Flickr group has also been set up to document the experience for those who have photos of the event.

Webcomix Thing – Cancelled?

The UK has many conventions but only one is specific to the smaller presses and webcomics of the known world. The UK Web and Mini Comix Thing has been running since 2004 and it seems that last year was its last outing.

The main guy behind it, "Mr Thing", has decided this year will not go on, wanting to "focus on leaving England."

There is currently word that people may band together and keep the Thing alive, but at this current point, the Webcomix Thing is no more.
